Australian Minerals Industry National Skills Shortage Strategy

The National Skills Shortage Strategy (NSSS) was announced by the Prime Minister in 2004 as a joint industry and government initiative to look into skill shortage issues relating to the trade and semi professional fields.  The project is funded by the Department of Education Science and Training.

The first phase of the project was the contracting of research to the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) and the National Institute of Labour Studies (NILS) who undertook a study into employment, job vacancies, attraction and retention, and education and training in the minerals sector.

Reframing the Future
In February the Australian Government announced its Reframing the Future projects, a Department of Education, Science and Technology (DEST) initiative, which is directly related to the training and TAFE area.

CME in conjunction with member companies, WA TAFE Colleges and universities have been successful in receiving funding for Goal Area 4 – Effective Networking.  Within this initiative the CME seeks to facilitate the sharing of learning experiences between TAFE lecturers, university lecturers and industry professionals. This will provide up to date, appropriate context for their teaching and learning processes through raising their understanding and knowledge base of the resources sector.
